Gastelum v Till added to UFC 244
What better way to start your career in the UFC middleweight division than a clash with the number four ranked fighter in said division? This is exactly the prospect that faces Darren Till after it was yesterday announced that he would meet Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 244 in November.
After suffering his first two defeats as a professional following defeats against Jorge Masvidal and Tyron Woodley, Darren Till (17-2-1NC) began his pro career in MMA as a middleweight before dropping down to welterweight at the end of 2014.
Speaking back in June, UFC president Dana White stated that “we might have pushed him too soon” following his back-to-back defeats, which begs the question as to why former title contender Kelvin Gastelum is his first opponent at middleweight? The simple answer to this, as confirmed by White, is that Till loved the idea of the fight and wholeheartedly agreed to the clash.
In Kelvin Gastelum (15-4), Till will face a man fresh off a unanimous defeat in a five-round title fight with current interim middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya. The Ultimate Fighter series 17 winner has no less than three Fight of the Night and three Performance of the Night bonuses in his fifteen-fight UFC career to date, including a first-round KO of what was Michael Bisping’s last fight before his retirement.
This will be a monumental task for Till but if anyone is capable of stepping up to the challenge, you’d be hard pushed to find a more eager or keener opponent than Darren Till.
UFC 244 takes place on Saturday 2nd November at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
