"I am still not fully aware that I became European champion, but I am proud that I am the first Croat to become Europe's champion since Mate Parlov," Filip told Večernji list daily after becoming the European heavyweight boxing champion.

"Hrga" arrived back to Zagreb together with Hrvoje Sep who won the bronze medal and their coach Leonard Pijetraj who was proud of the new champ. Mate Parlov became champion 42 years ago when he won his second gold medal in Belgrade.

"I must admit that I was happier when I became world junior champion, because it was my first great success, something completely new. In the meantime, I somehow got used to winning. I'm sorry that double world champion Majidov did not fight at this championship, but I hope I will get a chance to fight him at the world championship in Doha in two months,” said Hrgović humbly.

“It is not time to celebrate yet. I still have world championship ahead of me,” said the Croatian boxer.
