Wand’s wife admits: After Cro Cop KO’ed him we feared before entering the ring!
The legendary Wanderlei Silva was a special guest at Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye event that took place on New Year's Eve in Tokyo. He was not the only celebrity there since many other appeared in the ring after Cro Cop won, such as Fedor Emelianenko, Josh Barnett and Bob Sapp – Pride legends that contributed to the popularization of MMA.
Interestingly, they all fought Filipović and generally it did not go well for them. Cro Cop defeated Barnett thrice, KO’ed Sapp while Wand did not have it easier either. Their first match was draw while in their second meeting Cro Cop landed his high kick and stopped Wand whose career started spiraling down from that point.
The Japanese reporters made a big interview with Silva in Tokyo and we bring you the most interesting parts from Efight.jp portal.
Do you pray for the victory before the match?
"I of course want to win, but at the same time I want and protect myself. I also pray not to inflict an injury on my opponent as well. Through prayer you can get self-confidence and you can focus on what you have to do in the ring better. You balance the emotions."
What is your focus before the match?
"Primarily on the analysis of my opponent. I look at where he is the weakest. Then you can choose two approaches; either you will try to take advantage of his weakness, or you focus on your strengths. During the match, you can induce his weaknesses and try to capitalize them the best possible way."
Do you feel fear before you enter the ring?
"I have never feared opponents as such. I was afraid that I might lose the match. At the same time I want to make a good show to my fans. Mostly I was afraid that spectators would not be satisfied with the way I fought."
So you claim you never feared before the match?
"Oh, this is just a sport, life is a lot scarier than entering the ring," said Wand with a smile, but then his wife added…
“You can fear defeat only after you lose to Mirko Filipović the way he did. After that the feeling before entering the ring was never the same”, said Silva’s wife.
