Belfort wanted fight with Munoz or Romero for Interim title
Middleweight division champion Chris Weidman had to pull out of the match at UFC 184 in which he was to defend the title against Vitor Belfort. UFC offered Belfort an interim title match against Lyoto Machida while Gegard Mousasi was also in the calculations. However, he refused.
By Weidman's cancellation the UFC 184 event lost on its attraction and the leaders of the world's leading MMA organization wanted to find another opponent for Belfort and give him an interim title shot. However, the Brazilian fighter did not accept the match against Machida nor Mousasi. He decided to wait for Weidman to recover and to attack the title.
Belfort's wife and manager Joana Prado said to Globo that Belfort would fight for the interim title against Yoel Romero or Mark Munoz. However, the UFC did not like the proposition.
"I made a proposal for an interim title fight: Romero or Munoz," said Joana. "Weidman's style is similar to their style. I mean, they are right handed and wrestlers. The UFC said no and offered us Lyoto Machida but we turned that down. We thought it was better to wait until May. Our focus in camp was for a bout against Weidman. We are sad about the delays but waiting to make history."
UFC 184 is to take place February 28 and it will now be headlined by Ronda Rousey and Cat Zingano.
