UFC releases Lucas Martins
Although many believed that the win over Robert Whiteford in the Zagreb Arena will secure Lucas Martins another fight in the UFC, the MMA promotion released him anyway after seven matches.
28 year old Martins joined the UFC in 2013 as undefeated talent from Brazil with 12-0 score. However, he failed to prove himself against a very tough opponent Edson Barboza. But after that he KO’ed Jeremy Larson and tried to switch to bantam where he scored one more victory. He scored his third win via stoppage in the featherweight division after defeating Alex White.
These three-wins streak launched him among Top 15 fighters of his division and thus granted him a chance to fight a Top 10 fighter Darren Elkins. He lost via split decision and then he was outclassed by Mirsad Bektić. His match in Zagreb against Robar Whiteford was all or nothing.
In Zagreb Martins won via split decision, but the fans did not like the outcome. However, it was believed that this win could secure him a new UFC contract which did not happen and UFC believed he did not deserve that victory. It is quite surprising that UFC released such a young, talented and very exciting fighter. Only three out of his 19 matches did not end via stoppage.
