Bellator Kickboxing 12

Known for its history, culture and style, the Italian city of Milan made its debut on the Bellator European circuit with the hope of putting on a show fit for the historic city and its partisan inhabitants. With what is now the norm on European events, the evening will consist of dual MMA cards in the shape of Bellator Milan and Bellator 230. However, it was a third section of the show in the shape of Bellator Kickboxing 12 that kicked proceedings off.

With nine kickboxing bouts on the card, the first fight of the night was a back and forth affair between Luca Mameli and Pawel Zymansky. However, after three rounds, it was the Italian fighter Mameli who took the unanimous decision with all three judges scoring 30-27.

The decibel levels stepped up a notch as an all Milan lightweight encounter between Giacomo Licheri and Taras Hnatchuk followed. Despite only being the second fight of the night, the Allianz Cloud was starting to fill up and the atmosphere building as the Italian fans in attendance played their part in creating a buzz around the arena. Hnatchuk proved victorious mainly due to decimating the thighs and legs of his opponent in the third and final round. Licheri could be seen to wince as Hnatchuk unleashed hell on the lower limbs of Licheri throughout which saw him score a unanimous decision victory.

Another all Italian encounter followed as Endy Bonat took on Kebrom Neguse at featherweight. Again, we saw two fighters giving their all in what was another enthralling three-round war. Fittingly, the fight ended in a majority draw as two of the three judges scored this one 28-28.

The fourth fight of the night saw another Milan inhabitant take to the ring as Siliva La Notte, with close to 90 professional fights under her belt, took on the French debutant Jade Jorand. Despite her lack of professional experience, it was the debutant Jorand who came out with a sensational victory. Twelve seconds into the second round, Jorand threw a stunning kick to the head of La Notte which sent her crashing to the canvas, ending the fight in spectacular style.

An evenly contested 174-lb contract weight fight featured next as Yuri Bessmertny beat Guiseppe De Domenico by unanimous decision with all three judges scoring it 29-28 in favour of the Belarussian.

Fight number six of the evening featured the first American fighter on the card as Kevin ‘the soul assassin’ Ross took on the Italian Shan Cangelosi at featherweight. Throughout the fight, Cangelosi favoured the spinning back kicks but his opponent Ross was wise to the tactics of the Italian. With the clapper sounding for the final ten seconds of the fight, both Ross and Cangelosi gave it all they had to put on a frenetic finale to the fight. Yet again, it was down to the judges to decide the outcome with all three scoring it in favour of the Italian.

Things came to a quick conclusion in the next fight between Luca Cecchetti and Alex Avogadro. Following a brutal flying knee to the face of Avogardo, the referee called a timeout to have the left eye of Avogardo checked out by a doctor but with the eye swollen and firmly shut, the fight was over.

With over three hundred professional fights, Thailand’s Sudsakorn Sor Klinmee met Chingiz Allazov of Belarus in the co-main event. In the first round both fighters smiled at each other after every significant strike but it was the Belarussian who took the upper hand in the second as the smile was no longer on the face of Sudsakorn. Into the third and final round and following a respectful round of applause from a knowledgeable crowd, Allazov continued to exert pressure on his Thai opponent. After three-rounds, all three judges scored the fight 30-27 in favour of Allazov.

The main event of the kickboxing part of the card saw a title fight as Bellator featherweight world champion Gabriel Varga took on Italian challenger (17-6) Cristian Faustino (31-11-2). Despite being a competitive encounter, the cagey nature of a world title fight was evident throughout this five rounder as yet again, we went to the judges’ scorecards to confirm the result. Ultimately, the champions mettle and persistent attacks saw him retain the title against a valiant challenger in Faustino with Varga scoring a unanimous decision to retain the featherweight title.
