Bellator 230 results
Following the kickboxing, the attention turned to MMA as Bellator 230 got underway in the Allianz Cloud, Milan, Italy. In the opening fight of the night, we saw a lightweight prelim between Nicolo Solli and Dan Cassell. The Italian started strong, quickly closing range on the man from Wolverhampton. However, it was Cassell who struck with the first takedown, which was ultimately his downfall. Despite initially being in a strong position in the mount, Solli wrestled and attempted to outmanoeuvre Cassell with some solid jiu jitsu. With just over three minutes on the clock, Cassell tapped as Solli moved to 3-0 with a triangle choke, much to the delight if his legion of fans in attendance.
Things stepped up a notch for the first fight on the main card as an Italian grudge match played out between Andrea Fusi and Walter Pugliesi. After a split decision victory in favour of Fusin in their first encounter at the end of last year, this was an explosive fight from the off. In the first round, both Fusi and Pugliesi exchanged significant blows before Pugliesi took control in the second round with a flurry of assaults on Fusi. In a back and forth encounter, Fusi started the third round strong but again Pugliesi stepped up in what was an absolute war between these two. At the end of the fight, the Italian fans were in rapture of these two warriors. Unfortunately, there had to be an end to this fight and after three rounds, Walter Pugliesi got his vengeance by claiming a unanimous victory.
After what already has the makings of fight of the night, Kirill Sidelnikov and Domingos Barros had the unenviable task of following Pugliesi and Fusi. Unfortunately, the heavyweight showdown came nowhere near to matching the previous fight as Sidelnikov and Barros played out a gritty and uneventful fight, as can be the case with heavyweights. A subdued crowd sat back and recovered their breath through an encounter in which the main highlight was Fedor in the corner of Sidelnikov. In what was a tough act to follow, Sidelnikov came away with a unanimous victory that moves him to 12-6
Two experienced kickboxers returned their focus to MMA as Hesdy Gerges took on Dragos Zubco in the co-main event. With only four professional fights between them, it was the marginally more experienced Zubco who dominated the first round which was mostly spent up against the cage. Outside of the clinch, Zubco also dominated with some heavy strikes heading the way of Gerges. Two fights into this MMA career and Gerges has had a tough introduction to the sport. While there is no doubting his kickboxing and striking ability, as shown with a third-round knockdown, Gerges still has a long way to go if he wants to succeed in MMA, as this unanimous decision defeat suggests.
After two uneventful heavyweight fights, the attention turned the main event between former Bellator middleweight champion Rafael Carvalho and Vadim Nemkov. Taking place at light heavyweight. Nemkov started strong with some heavy leg kicks and the first takedown of the fight inside the first twenty seconds. This set the tone for the first round as Nemkov struck again with another big takedown before rocking Carvalho with a strike that left the Brazilian stumbling back towards the cage.
Nemkov struck again early in the second with another powerful jab that unsteadied Carvalho again. A forlorn Carvalho never really seemed to get going in this fight as Nemkov out-struck and out-grappled the Brazilian. With 3:56 on the clock in the second round, the fight was over as Nemkov sunk in a rear-naked choke to draw a conclusion to the Bellator 230 card.
