Moraza-Pollard facing Monfort for title at Lion Fight 56
Lion Fight Promotions announced today that reigning World Cruiserweight champion Chip Moraza-Pollard will face a new opponent in his next title defense.
“The Surgeon” (10-0) will now take on Spain’s Victor Monfort in the main event of Lion Fight 56 set for Saturday, June 8th at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The four-fight main card will air live on CBS Sports Network beginning at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
Moraza-Pollard’s original opponent Kongjak Po Baoin was unable to secure proper travel documents and was forced to bow out of the event. However, Monfort figures to provide a strong challenge to the champion’s throne. Sporting a 48-13 record, Monfort has pledged to come right after Moraza-Pollard’s crown.
“Like every athlete, I want to fight at the highest level and compete on the best show against the best fighters,” said Monfort. “This is a big opportunity for me and I’m not going to waste it.
“More than anything, I want the title. I want to thank Lion Fight for giving me this opportunity and I won’t disappoint.”
Moraza-Pollard, who hails from nearby Plymouth, Massachusetts, has defended his title four times, including once already this year. Back in February, he notched a commanding unanimous decision win over Juan Cervantes, and had previously defended his belt at Foxwoods with wins over Mark MacKinnon and Remy Vectol.
The main card for Lion Fight 56 includes the first title defense for new North American lightweight champion Amine Ballafrikh as he takes on Mexico’s Ricardo Cruz along with a super cruiserweight battle between Doug Holland and Tafon Nchukwi plus a super featherweight matchup pitting Michal Triana against Joseph Mueller.
