Rematch Set For Heavyweight Rivals
The first-ever Lion Fight heavyweight matchup was certainly a memorable matchup. Now the two rival combatants will face each other again, according to lionfight.com.
Three weeks ago, Cody “Freight Train” East and “Bazooka” Joe Stripling led off the CBS Sports Network broadcast for Lion Fight 54 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a hellacious battle – one that saw East suffer the most visible damage yet get the nod from the judges thanks to a pair of knockdowns. East pulled out the decision by scores of 49-45, 49-45 and 48-46 which drew raucous applause from the winner’s home-town fans yet also some disconcerting opinions in various forums. East improved to 2-0 in Muay Thai while Stripling suffered his first defeat falling to 4-1.
Both fighters have now agreed to repeat the fireworks.
The fight will take place in August with the date and venue to be formally announced in the very near future. However, the rematch will afford Stripling the opportunity to have more of his supporters in attendance.
“It was a tremendously exciting fight and I think there is more than enough interest in seeing these two guys do it again,” said Lion Fight CEO Scott Kent.
“Normally rematches are reserved for title fights or perhaps a split-decision outcome, but you look at who was worse for wear after the first fight between them and I think that tells a story. At the same time, Cody carried the action a lot and knocked Joe down. That’s enough right there to make this rematch happen.”
Stripling readily agreed to the rematch and offered a stern prediction.
“I appreciate the opportunity and this time I won’t leave it to the judges,” he said.
East, too, showed a passion for avoiding the scorecards.
“I’m gonna finish what I started and knock his ass out.”
